Evaluation of the Aboriginal Sentencing Court at Kalgoorlie

The Kalgoorlie Aboriginal Magistrates court had been operating for some 2 years and Shelby was contracted to review its effectiveness in relation to its objectives. These included aims both in the areas of community strengthening as well as reduction in recidivism. The study incorporated a variety of data collection mechanisms including observation of the court in progress, and interviews with departmental and community stakeholders as well as the analysis of court data. The recommendations were accepted by the Minister when the project concluded in 2009.
