State-wide Specialist Aboriginal Mental Health Service

Shelby undertook the evaluation of the State-wide Specialist Aboriginal Mental Health Service (SSAMHS) after gaining ethics approval from the North Metropolitan Health Service Mental Health Research Ethics Committee and the WA Aboriginal Health Ethics Committee.

The purpose of the evaluation was to determine whether SSAMHS was having beneficial impact upon Aboriginal communities and improving engagement with mental health services.

Shelby carried out considerable field work conducting site visits to Derby, Broome and Kalgoorlie, as well as the Perth metro, to interview key stakeholders, including carers, consumers, SSAMHS staff, staff in mainstream mental health services and service provider management. An online survey was also provided to service providers and quantitative data regarding health outcomes was provided and included in the analysis.
